Fort William

Fort William is a major tourist centre with Glen Coe just to the south, and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is an important centre for hill walking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and other mountains. It is also well known for its nearby famous Downhill Mountain Bike Track and its connection to the Great Glen Way; a cycle way from Inverness to Fort William through the Great Glen.

Seven Heads

This is a tall needle-like monument topped by a sculpture of a hand holding a dagger and seven severed heads - a reminder of one of the most gruesome episodes in Scottish clan history.

Spean Bridge  

Spean Bridge

Spean Bridge is a growing community 9 miles north of Fort William on the A82. The village is well known as the place where WWII troops arrived by train to begin basic commando training in the area. A commemorative monument 2 miles further up the road stands in a commanding position overlooking the Nevis Range of mountains including the Mamores and Grey Corries.

The Commando Memorial

The world famous Commando Memorial stands proudly high above Spean Bridge. The three gigantic bronze figures stand proud in battledress, woollen caps and climbing boots looking across the Great Glen. The 17 foot high Memorial was designed by Scott Sutherland from Dundee College of Art in 1949, and unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1952. Hundreds of veteran Commandos make the annual pilgrimage to attend the Service of Remembrance and Wreath Laying held at the Memorial in November.
