Invermoriston
Old
Bridge at Invermorison
Six miles away Fort Augustus in the direction of Inverness is
Invermoriston. This village with 2 shops and few B&Bs, one hotel and one
campsite is also steeped in Jacobite romance, like the legendary Seven
Men of Moriston and rebel hero Roderick MacKenzie (The Seven Heads).
Invermoriston dates back to at least 1600, and in the 1640s a sawmill
was in operation processing the surrounding woodland for export by boat.
Although there were tracks in the 1770s, the first real roads along the
west side of Loch Ness and west towards Glen Shiel were built by Thomas
Telford in 1813.

Since the launch of the walk in 2002 (Great Glen Ways) it has brought to
Invermoriston a stream of pedestrian visitors with time to appreciate
what it has to offer.
The village's most visited attraction is the old Telford bridge which
crosses the spectacular River Moriston falls. This bridge used to form
part of the main road between Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus but was
replaced in the 1930's with the new bridge which still stands today.

The Community Council is twinned with Fort Augustus (The Fort Augustus
and Glenmoriston Community Council = FACC).
